Backstrap loom weaving
The backstrap loom (telar de cintura) is one of the oldest weaving techniques in Peru.
The loom is tied around the weaver’s waist and anchored to a tree or post, creating a portable tool that can be carried anywhere.
Despite its simplicity, it allows the creation of highly intricate textiles, with geometric designs and symbols that reflect each community’s worldview.
Foot Loom weaving
During the colonial period, the foot loom was introduced by the Spanish.
Unlike the backstrap loom, this one is fixed and uses pedals to control the threads. It allowed artisans to produce much larger fabrics, things like blankets, rugs, and pieces for trade.
Even though it was not originally Andean, it has been fully embraced and now coexists with the ancestral weaving traditions.
