A Guide to Layering Knitwear

With the upcoming chill weather we’re expecting, we wanted to share our guide to layering knitwear. Behind every well-styled look lies the art of knitwear manufacturing, where quality materials and craftsmanship make all the difference. If you match the right pieces, you’re rewarded with a stylish outfit that’s quick and easy to put together, along with long-lasting and all-important warmth and comfort.

New approaches to anything can feel a little daunting so we’ve put together a guide on how to choose the best pieces for layering below.

We’ve grouped some garments into three sections of increasing thickness:

  • Baselayer

  • Midlayer

  • Outerwear

The crux of the idea is that everything goes with everything. Here are the combinations:

  1. Anything from Baselayer goes with anything from Midlayer or Outerwear

  2. Anything from Midlayer goes with anything from Outerwear

  3. And when it’s very cold and you’re looking for the ultimate comfortable and warm outfit, you could layer something from Baselayer, with anything from Midlayer and with anything from Outerwear, for a tripling of warmth.

As temperatures start to dip, intelligent layering that utilises and enhances the natural properties of different yarns will keep you feeling warm and comfortable or prevent you from overheating.

A Breathable Base

Your first layer should be worn close to the skin, and it is essential to choose a breathable fabric. Understanding how to layer knitwear starts with selecting the right base. Knitted t-shirts, made from ultra-fine Indian-grown and spun cotton, create an ideal skin-friendly base over which you can layer chunkier knitwear. Or opt for Italian-spun extra fine merino for enhanced insulating properties.

This incredibly lightweight yarn feels luxuriously soft and is extremely warm, trapping air close to your skin and protecting you from wind chill on cold days. Merino is renowned as nature's performance fabric, thanks in large part to its thermo-regulatory properties. If you’re wondering how to layer knitwear effectively, always start with natural, fine fibers that allow airflow and softness.

Chunky Midweight Layers

For your second layer, choose a chunkier yarn, like our midweight knitwear, that will add extra warmth. On warmer autumnal days, these midweight layers can be wrapped around your shoulders, allowing you to add a touch of warmth when you need it.

Versatile chunky cotton cardigans and fisherman jumpers, with their incredibly tactile deep rib knit, create a comfortable, skin-friendly layer that offers a touch of warmth for the autumn months.

Knitted Jackets & Blazers

These effortlessly stylish jackets are an easy way of adding the final touch to your outfit, one of those Knitwear layering tips you shouldn’t overlook:

  1. Chunky, Warm Jackets. These are the heavy hitters of the collection. Let your needles loose on hearty yarns, quickly growing a dense, insulating fabric. Like wrapping yourself in a hug.

  2. The Classic Cardigan. A practical choice, perfect for those who delight in the traditional charm of cables. You can layer this jacket over anything, just as easily tossed over a flannel shirt as a silk blouse.

  3. The Oversized and Carefree. Jackets with a wonderfully roomy fit, ideal for wrapping around yourself as the temperatures dip. No waist-shaping or fancy adjustments here — just pure, unrestricted comfort.

  4. The Lightweight. These are the jackets you knit in summer. They are the breezy companions that add a touch of warmth without stifling you. Knit with a fine wool or even cotton, these pieces will drape beautifully without adding weight.
